I am a junior at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey. I wrote and recorded an anti-smoking song. Students and faculty at my school enjoyed listening to my song and encouraged me to promote my message of anti-smoking. I originally wrote and recorded this anti-smoking song because of a REBEL anti-smoking competition at my school. I was the winner of this competition and so my video was entered into a larger competition by Bergen County REBEL. The ENT and Allergy Associates (ENTA) along with the American Cancer Society presented an anti-smoking competition for high schools in the New York and New Jersey area. To my surprise, I actually won the larger competition hosted by the ENT and Allergy Associates (ENTA) along with the American Cancer Society. All I want to do is spread the message of anti-smoking to youth across the nation, as well as encourage current smokers to quit and music is one of the best ways to do this! Why REAL? I originally joined REAL because I wanted to be included in all of the cool projects on Maui and the other islands. As I became more and more involved, I found that I was gaining skills that I will use later in life, like public speaking, testimony, and group collaboration. I have never been so passionate about an issue like tobacco prevention and I had never known how to act on it. I have been empowered.

KAHULUI – The annual Great American Smokeout, a nationwide event created by the American Cancer Society to encourage smokers to quit, will be marked on Maui with a family event from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Maui Mall in Kahului.

Door prizes, food booths, interactive health awareness tables and live entertainment by One Inity and Lia Live will be featured at the free event, presented by The Coalition for Tobacco Free Maui. Mayor Alan Arakawa will open with a proclamation; Zumba by Rayo McPhee will follow.

Winners of the “Smoke-Free Cars = Healthy Kids” art contest will be presented by Sen. Roz Baker and Council Member Don Couch. The contest was open to all Maui County students in grades 6 to 8 to help build awareness that secondhand smoke in cars is harmful to everyone’s health, especially those who are ages 17 and younger.

Other Great American Smokeout events include REAL students on Couch’s morning talk show Tuesday and presentation to juniors and seniors at Baldwin High School on Wednesday, sign-waving by MEO Youth Service students on Thursday, Lahainaluna High School’s Health Fair and GASO Awareness Jam at Kalama Park on Friday. There will be a quit information table at University of Hawaii Maui College’s Paaina building Thursday.
